When we asked facetiously if it were true that he had won the 2008 Daytona 200, Welshman Chaz Davies deadpanned "apparently".
Honda rider Josh Hayes approached Davies the other night and handed over the trophy. It was given to Hayes after heinitiallywon the 200 but Hayes' Honda was later found to be in non-compliance with technical rules and his win erased. Second on-track-finisher Davies was then awarded the win.
Trying to get a rise out of the lanky and usually non-plussed Davies is tough, and talking to him about winning one of the biggest races in America doesn't seem to make his pulse blip.
"Anticlimactic, yeah, it was," he said. "I'd forgotten about it, to be honest."
Daytona's relatively big purse should have put a nice chunk of money in the Davies bank account. What did you do with the cash....? we asked.
"I don't even know if I've gotten the money," he said. "I'm not sure."
However, if you want to get a rise out of Davies about Daytona, you can--just not the 200. Instead, talk to him about video games. He went home to the UK after Daytona (and testing at Barber, Infineon and Laguna Seca) where he rode his bicycle a good bit, blew up his 'rodded mini-bike and then set the second-fastest time in the on-line version of the game Grand Turismo. At Daytona.
"That was great," Davies said, finally smiling. "The guy who had the fast lap, he has the whole set up, steering wheel and the driving chair so he beat me. I'll be getting one of those chairs and giving it another go."
