Kocinski's Rotax Dirt Tracker
images by souptastic

Ex-world champion John Kocinski raced an amazingly well-prepared Rotax at Gene Romero's Pomona race recently. We've decided to do a photo feature on the bike.

While it may look like just a nice Ron Wood Rotax dirt tracker from the late 1980s, the devil is in the details. The ex-Rod Sexton chassis is 4130 steel. The fuel tank and seat look old school fiberglass but are made from sadistically thin carbon fiber.

Rotax 665cc engine built by Phil Darcy. It rolls on PM wheels with Ohlins forks and rear shock.

48-50mm Lectron flat-slide carburetor with clear bowl. Note titanium foot rest assembly and brake lever.

Bike was built by John and Andy Bondio, who collaborated with many to complete it. Note carbon fiber number plate, fork guards, timing belt cover and shock guard.

Sum of its parts: hand-bent and welded titanium exhaust with carbon end cap. Forged wheels and custom brake rotor.

Totally sano on the outside: inside is a C/R five-speed gearbox. Obviously Kocinski's racer is a testament to the amazing engineering ability still alive and well on the American dirt track scene.

Carbon fiber inner fender and other pieces were so thin and beautiful they'd stop an HRC engineer in his tracks. Crew had to hunt for a place thick enough to mount the transponder.
