Why Suzuki's TL1000R Never Became Ducati
A reader asks, “Why wasn’t the TL a competitive platform for a Superbike when the Ducati was doing so well with an apparently similar design?”
In 1998 Suzuki ran two Superbike teams—one riding the GSX-R750, the other on the TL1000R 90-degree Vee-Twin. The company’s racing had been unsuccessful for some time. A reader asks, “Why wasn’t the TL a competitive platform for a Superbike when the Ducati was doing so well with an apparently similar design?”

The simple answer is that while Ducati had been developing their Twin in World Supers for eleven seasons, and had devoted large resources to it, Suzuki already had their hands full with GSX-R development and did not have the people for two programs. Riders Steve Crevier and Larry Pegram had contrasting opinions about what they were riding—Crevier liked the bike, Pegram found its rear suspension (that weird rotary damper) lacking. Race results were indifferent.

Suzuki had clearly studied the packaging problem of a big Vee-Twin—the front cylinder pushes the heavy crankcase (with the other cylinder sticking up from it) rearward, making it difficult to get adequate load on the front tire. Ducati spent years on working around that problem.

Suzuki had already worked with slotted radiators to allow their two-stroke square four engines to be mounted closer to the front wheel, and they used that concept on TLR.

Suzuki had the advantage of being able to study Ducati’s evolving solutions, and according to some, the Kayaba rotary damper (of a type of which millions were made for cars) looked like it had packaging advantages. For racing, it was a mistake, because had they adopted the usual single tubular rear damper, they could have had top-performing dampers with one phone call—Like the ones they were already using on the 750.

This is a violation of a difficult rule in racing—if you’re going to try even a small technical revolution, it’s best to have a conventional back-up plan.

As pointed out by Rich Doan, who worked with the TLR at the races, it needed a dyno team and a track test team behind it. Because Suzuki is a modest-sized company that meant “Pick one—you can’t afford to develop both” and the program ended. And, as history tells us, Matt Mladin and analyst Ammar Bazazz, beginning the very next year, would win seven AMA Superbike titles with the Yosh Team GSX-R.

The engine was strong. Massimo Bordi, designer of the 851 Ducat that was developed into a World Superbike success, had wanted to give it plain main bearings (which have long lives, excellent damping, and high radial stiffness). Suzuki chose plain bearings from the start. Doan told me, “every time we tore down and inspected them, they were perfect.”

Engine development is difficult and expensive, because it requires constant testing until failure, rapid re-design and re-testing, until the result finishes races. Then you need a rider who can win, and a team who work effectively to make the bike work with his riding style.
