When it began: Rob Muzzy saw Anthony Gobert ride a Honda at the Sugo WSBK round in 1994. Anthony won the Oz Superbike title and wanted a path out but Honda had nothing so Anthony rode Muzzy's Kawasaki at Phillip Island. Gobert's riding at Phillip Island was Biblical. Muzzy says now that Anthony was the most polite young rider he had ever met when their relationship began.

Every single time he won a race Anthony made a point to thank every person on the team, any sponsors present and any fan who said anything to him. He didn't just shake the tire engineer's hand--he went over and shook hands with the guys who were spooning rubber on wheels in the sun. His graciousness endeared him to a very wide swath of people worldwide. He never blew off a fan. He remained close with Tony Romo (left) and Tom Halverson (right) long after his racing career ended.

Ducati's Paolo Ciabatti put the deal together for Gobert to race in the USA after Goey was kicked out of Grand Prix. Gobert was deeply depressed about the state of his career when Ciabatti contacted him with an offer. Ducati supported him with 100% factory spec motorcycles. It revived his career.

Goey on the Jim Leonard-tuned Vance and Hines Ducati. For decades after he left Ducati technicians said Gobert was engine management and traction control before either were fine tuned in the modern era. Gobert could feel the difference in a minuscule change to the engine or the chassis. It took Jim Leonard a half a test to figure out what Gobert was saying when he only wanted a "justabzdick"-sized change. What Goey was saying was "Just a bee's-dick, Jimmy, just a bee's dick". True story.

Terry Vance stands with the 'Show at Elkhart after Goey beat DuHamel and the RC45. That night Anthony was wearing only whipped cream at Siebkins and his dad was in jail. When Anthony celebrated a win it was like Times Square after the Japanese surrendered in WWII.

Laguna Seca was the scene of a magic weekend for Anthony Gobert. Muzzy built him a gear-drive Kawasaki Superbike engine which sounded completely badass to every gearhead in the vicinity. He used it to win one WSBK race at the dry lagoon, which sent the crowd into ecstasies. His hair looked like an old mop used in a paint booth. What color would you call your hair, Anthony? "You're the writer, mate."

To Anthony Laguna Seca was just another Supercross track. Crewchief Jim Leonard on the podium with him. Kenny Roberts stood wordlessly in the pit lane and watched Goey drop the hammer. His arms were crossed, his cap was pulled down and anybody who knew him knew to STAY BACK. After Gobert won the race, Roberts said, "Why would the factory build a team to beat their own factory team?"

It is one of the most remarkable stories in racing: That Anthony Gobert and Mat Mladin basically grew up across the road from one another. They were as different as eggs and sand. A motivated Goey is always worth watching. He had been fired by Suzuki mid-season the year prior and he said he'd rather be in ICU than let the Suzukis beat him his first race back. The post-race press conference was basically those two taking shots at each other; Anthony smiling his impish grin the entire time while Mladin grew angrier.

When he began racing the AMA Superbike series a great many veterans of the championship thought his party-boy physique would boat anchor him even on a factory Ducati. The reality is that his talent and capability on a motorcycle let him eat as many peanut buster parfait DQ specials as he wanted.

Italian Frankie Chili tries to hang with Anthony down the hill at Laguna Seca WSBK. Go' was unbelievable in that section of the track. Watching him run it in on the brakes--on any bike--into the final turn gave you chills.

Beaten in race one at Road Atlanta by Miguel DuHamel, Leonard fought the Ducati technical manager for a set up that Italy was convinced would not work, had never worked for any Ducati rider ever. Go-Show did one fast lap in morning practice, came in, told Leonard "we got em". He led every lap of race two at Atlanta and easily won the race.

Phoenix Arizona was a place many riders felt wasn't safe enough for the AMA Superbike series. Don't you think the walls are too close?, someone asked Go-Show. I don't look at them, he said.
Brian J Nelson(14/19)
Like any top-level motocross racer Anthony was adroit at the verbal challenges of racing. When DuHamel said that his tire would not allow him to race with Gobert at Elkhart, Goey took exception and said Miguel wasn't giving him proper credit for how hard he was riding. It was very tense.

The Phoenix round of the championship was the longest day of Mat Mladin's life as Gobert strafed the grid and was his typical gregarious self to Mladin's stone-faced contempt.

The second year of the Muzzy contract Anthony rebelled like a teenager. He criticized the team, his mechanics and Muzzy in the press. It was a rough year for everyone on the team but Gobert finished the season by scoring a huge double win at Phillip Island. For 1997 he was off to Grand Prix.

When his teammate, Ben Bostrom, crashed in December at the Dunlop tire test at Daytona, brutally hurting his arm, the track was closed. Goey quickly got dressed, got in his rental car and drove straight to the Daytona hospital. He was the first one there, the first one to ask the ER doctor how Ben was and if he needed anything. He arrived there faster than anyone from the team and even Bostrom's girlfriend.
