Ginger Molloy chats with Rayborn in victory circle at Talledega in 1971. Molloy was the real-deal from NZ when most people could not find it on a globe. He raced a Bultaco in Grand Prix for many years.

The Dega. WFO track in the old south.

Some kid Bud Aksland found in Temecula. He says he will split the driving but he sleeps the whole way. Every. Damn. Time.

Chalk boards. Whitlock's monstrosity of hair.

Every time we have lunch with Miguel we ask him, so let me get this straight, can you confirm, do I understand this? At one time, you were one of Yvon DuHamel's sperm, right? Emde. Yvon, and Dick Mann. Dick is looking for his wife or his girlfriend so she can get him his partial. True story.

The late Bob Wakefield, racer, engineer, thinker and trier of things others only thought about. This is probably his Kawasaki A1-R for which he had crafted titanium connecting rods with pressed-in races to support the surface loadings of the needle rollers. He also made magnesium steering-head components. He did not dig the give and take of phone conversations so he would say his piece into a microphone, record it and send it in the mail. He was fascinated by doing wheelies, but the story was one of his mag pieces broke upon landing and Bob died. As per the rulebook mechanics had to wear white, and women were not allowed/supposed to be in the pits.

One of the fastest guys in the 1970s, Ray Hempstead (center) holds court in the pits. This is where the term "bench racing" took life. Note the line of soda bottles under the bench, the toolbox that has held up many a motorcycle for a wheel change on the ground. Hempstead's friend and driver Clyde James with his back to the camera.

Burrito. The bike he is sitting on is in Klemph's shop in very rural Minnesota but don't tell anyone.

Yeeeeaaaaahhh, pretty soon nobody will be kicking sand in my face thanks to Charles Atlas. I'll show that bully.

New Zealand native Ginger Molloy won the lightweight race at Talladega. He beat Australian Kel Carruthers for one of the biggest wins of his career. Note the football chin strap and young man looking on wishing he could win races too.

Some woman on the bleachers trying to get a shot or get in a shot. She is holding an early Nikon F SLR. There are stories that in 'Nam they could withstand a gunshot. If she were 19 in this shot that makes her 73 now.

Nixon. Ready for whatever comes at him: a race, a girl, a fight, a joint, a beer; bring it.
