As Witnessed: Talladega AMA Roadrace Sept. 4, 1971
Al Ivins(6/12)
The late Bob Wakefield, racer, engineer, thinker and trier of things others only thought about. This is probably his Kawasaki A1-R for which he had crafted titanium connecting rods with pressed-in races to support the surface loadings of the needle rollers. He also made magnesium steering-head components. He did not dig the give and take of phone conversations so he would say his piece into a microphone, record it and send it in the mail. He was fascinated by doing wheelies, but the story was one of his mag pieces broke upon landing and Bob died. As per the rulebook mechanics had to wear white, and women were not allowed/supposed to be in the pits.
